An Authentic Christmas!

A question printed in the Milwaukee Journal asked,  "Where can I buy aluminum Christmas-tree needles to spread on the carpet under my aluminum Christmas tree?  I want it to look natural as if they'd fallen off the tree in the old fashioned way." The editor replied: “They aren't available right now, but a satisfactory substitute is to buy a few boughs of natural evergreen, allow the needles to dry and fall off, and then spray with aluminum paint. They look like the real thing!”

We all laugh, but the frightening fact is that we can become so used to living with the imitation that we miss the Authentic! So many thoughts are produced when we ponder what Christmas means...most are good, yet still are only an imitation of the Authentic.

     * A time to think “religiously” which can help rearrange our priorities, but still fall short of the Authentic because a system of beliefs can only travel so far inside a fallen being like me. My “Self” will finally get in the way and even overtake it.

     * Family time...which we all desire to be warm, fun, and great times. Even this will fall short because families are made up of sinners like me, so some Christmases will be better than others...again missing the Authentic.

     * Gift giving. Always fun...until our flesh feels missed, slighted, pressured, or just saddened by the re-gifting of what you gave to someone years ago! (Always a great reason to buy something you would really want!) The Authentic gift NEVER falls short.

     * Brotherly love and peace toward all men. This is a lofty and wonderful goal, however, once again our fallen nature exposes it as just an imitation. We will stop shooting our guns at each other for a day and wish “goodwill and peace” to all men...then try to kill them the next day.??? The Authentic brings a "selfless" goodwill and an "eternal" peace!

I pray we all enjoy the “good” imitations...but not miss the Authentic. Our Creator created us with an unbelievable power. The freedom to choose to be in relationship with Him or reject that. No other living thing known in the universe possesses such power.

DD and I pray that you make sure you know that this day represents the Truth that God planned before the foundation of this earth and brought to pass a few millennial ago when He became flesh and was born the same way we all were. Refusing to keep His rights, He emptied Himself so that He could give Himself as the payment of our sin, and enable us...if we desire...to refuse to live under the power of sin, instead choosing to live under His power.

It truly is an Authentic gift! It cost us nothing but cost Him everything and He gave it with no strings attached. It is all done...we choose to receive His gift or reject it. He loves us so much He will not force this gift upon us. If you believe He is, He became human, lived a perfect life, and offered it as a sacrifice for your sin, you tell Him that and tell Him you trust your life and eternity in what He did, and ask Him to forgive your sin and make you an authentic child of God, and you choose to follow Him...you will experience the only Authentic meaning of Christmas!

It's not about songs, decorations, family time, world peace! It is about entering into a relationship with a Being so far above all we know or understand and beginning a relationship with Him that will be FOREVER! Don't leave this gift unopened...take the chance! Open yourself to experiencing God's Authentic gift.

God Bless, Merry Christmas

Missing the forest and the trees!

Ephesians 4:1–3 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Colossians 3:14–15 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Whenever we consider God’s Word, we must be careful how we balance the forest (Big Picture) and the trees (details) because if we are not careful we can miss both! It is debated who said, “Keep the main thing, the main thing” but long before Ford or Covey stated it, God communicated the same Truth in a different way:

Genesis 2:16–17…“From any tree of the garden you may eat FREELY; BUT from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you SHALL NOT EAT, for in the day that you eat from it YOU WILL SURELY DIE.” (emphasis mine)

Adam had complete freedom with all the fruit…except one! It did not matter if he ate from all the others…NOT this one! He could even forget some of the other fruit, but not this one! Whatever else happened in the garden, the main thing was to take to heart the warning about this ONE!

I realize that the situation we all find ourselves in worldwide, has affected the way we have to live, yet it also seems to be impacting how we think. I cannot remember a time where I have seen so much “quarreling” among the family of God on social media. After visiting several sites that I pray for to have a positive impact on their readers, I am alarmed how intense and how much time the dialogue has become concerning "theories" created by fallen men, instead of healthy discussions on what Scripture teaches. So, I just want to challenge the “spirit” that I hear from many out there.

I respect every child of God’s right to a personal conviction concerning “isms” created by we fallen men. Yet, an “ism” is not Bible Doctrine. For example, we know from black & white doctrine, Salvation is a gift of God i.e., grace received through faith alone! The Word states it that clear. How that exactly works, the Word does not state. The Scriptures teach throughout that God chooses us…and we choose Him. How does that work? How does God choose? Based on what? To teach only one side exposes a dishonest spirit. How does the Trinity work - 3 & 1 at the same time? How does incarnation work -100% human, 100% Deity = 200%? The tensions drive the finite mind crazy. So we invent our own theory to try to explain how it works! One of my favorite Bible teachers once said "Every Doctrine of God in Scripture has a tension in it. When you remove that tension by trying to explain it in finite terms, you remove the Divine!" So True! Yet now, even he has moved to a position he said he could never take. In 1986 at a conference he showed exactly why he could never take the extreme position on a particular "ism".  Now he is there. I still love his teaching, but what he has shown me is that even the greatest human teacher is in the end…only a fallen human, just like I am.

When God does not give the answer, we are not wrong to seek a "theory" of how it works, BUT, we must leave it in that land..." theory land "...NOT Scriptural Authority. Jesus & Paul preached firmly to focus on the "main thing" and not get sidetracked into fallen human theories. They are fun to study and lovingly discuss, but they are worthless in the end...and when handled wrong, even destructive. How much Satan must love to see Christian brothers quarreling over what "so & so" said versus explaining to a lost world what God said in His Word. Jesus lived in the day where everyone was following one Rabbi or another. He did not waste His time getting into arguments about their theories. Instead, He challenged them to focus on what was really important. This kind of quarreling is what politics breed, not the Holy Spirit. We need to let the Word speak for itself and if we need to bring our "theories or "isms" to it, let's be humble and admit this is our personal conviction, not what the Scripture states. Then we can learn to dialogue, agree to disagree, and still respect each other. We remain in fellowship with each other because we agree and are united on the "Main Thing" which is what the Scripture states in black and white. No commentary needed. Please consider Acts 15.

Matthew 23:23-24 “Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You give a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you neglect what is more important in the law—justice, mercy, and faithfulness! You should have done these things without neglecting the others. Blind guides! You strain out a gnat yet swallow a camel!

Mark 7:6–8 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’ “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”

2 Timothy 2:23–26 But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels. The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

1 Timothy 6:3–5 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

2 Timothy 2:14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers.

Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.

The So What: Do you find yourself doing what you can to bring unity and peace? Some “hills” are worth dying on…do you know the difference, or is every issue the same for you? If you win your argument but at the cost of the gospel…what did you win?

Is Your “Want” what you want…or Are “You” what your Want wants?

I Want:

* A savings account that allows me to withdraw as much as I desire but never gets smaller.

* A car that only needs to be filled with gas, oil, water, and air once.

* A house where the grass stays green but never needs to be cut, where the paint will change to any color I desire, without using a brush, and the rooms would grow or shrink as I see fit.

* A wife that knows I am always right, that loves to watch sports on TV and that thinks shopping is a waste of time.

* Children that love to put things away, that leave home at 13 to college with a fully paid scholarship.

* A church building that never needs maintenance.

* A congregation that always agrees with me.

* Ice cream that tastes like it is from heaven but causes you to lose weight!

I bet your list would be exaggerated also. We all have wants; there is nothing wrong with having wants, however, there is a more important question… "Do our wants have us?”

We saw how David’s and Hezekiah’s mindset impacted their actions, now let’s endeavor to use those lessons in application to our life. If we control our thoughts we can control that fallen nature (Flesh) we have had since birth and that continues to battle for control after we have received a new nature created by the Holy Spirit when we entered into a relationship with our Lord.

Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

All the will power in the world is useless if you cannot control “Self!”  Believe me, I know from experience. When we become a child of God “Self” is given a new nature by God. This is where the battle lines are drawn. God does not “fix” the fallen nature we have. Instead, He places in us through the Holy Spirit a new nature that loves Him. The fallen nature remains, but cannot command us, yet we can yield to it. Understanding how this works is essential if we desire to empower our mindset to control which nature “Self” obeys.

In this devotional, we will identify the struggle, and in the following devotionals, we will look at Scriptural examples of how to live in the new nature.

In Rom 7 the battle is illustrated as Paul shares how these natures interact with who he is.

Romans 7:14–25…The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate…I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

No…Paul is not schizophrenic; in fact, he is one of the more balanced individuals that ever lived. We are human beings, with a nature that controls us, at salvation a new nature is created (regeneration). How we think will determine which nature is driving our life.

Romans 8:6–8 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.

Galatians 5:17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

The So What: Please take some time to meditate on this struggle. Do you do things you really do not want to do? How does that make you feel? Do you sometimes feel that you will never be able to control “Self” in your life? What do you believe is the “open door” that allows your “Flesh” to gain control?

Keeping what is Important…Important!

There is a famous true story of a home that caught fire in a town. There were two firehouses in that town; one volunteer, the other professional. The volunteer house arrived first and began working, and then the professional house arrived. The two “chiefs” began to argue who should be working the fire, which drew both houses into the debate. As they argued which of them should put the fire out…the fire consumed the house!

King Hezekiah stepped into a terrible situation…every Truth concerning God had been “prostituted” (To devote oneself or one's talent to an unworthy purpose, especially for personal gain) by the leaders and the people bringing in every idolatry in the world. How did he turn that around?

His mindset guided him to make the choices and exercise the actions that would accomplish that. We looked at two of those “Thoughts” that guided him:

1. THOUGHT: Do it right!

2. THOUGHT: Know why you are doing something! (Hezekiah gave ownership of these “Truths” to his fellow leaders, who then shared it with the people)

If we desire to make an impact for God on our culture we would do well to follow Hezekiah's thinking, which will drive our actions. Here are the other mindsets he possessed that enabled him to stand firm even when Kings and kingdoms were threatening him!

3. THOUGHT:  Only what God thinks matters

Hezekiah was not one that considered or took poles! He stood on the standard God had set and nothing else mattered. So he would do whatever it took...including getting rid of something that once led to "good" but now had become "evil."

How sad it is the state we find the majority of our leaders today. They are not driven by a deep conviction but are driven by the desire to remain in power, so they will move to whatever position will give them votes!

2 Kings 18:3-4 He did right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father David had done. He removed the high places and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the sons of Israel burned incense to it; and it was called Nehushtan.

4. THOUGHT:  God's name is what matters most.

Even when Hezekiah was sent a very threatening message from the most powerful king in the world at that time, he refused to allow that to determine his actions. He was controlled by the Truth that God was King of the universe, not just the world. God's reputation was at stake...not Hezekiah's!

2 Kings 19:14-19 Then Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD. 15 Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said, “O LORD, the God of Israel, who are enthroned above the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16 “Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see; and listen to the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God....“Now, O LORD our God, I pray, deliver us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”

This is what David did in his battle with Goliath.

1 Samuel 17:43–47 The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods...Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God...you have taunted. 46 “This day the LORD will deliver you up into my hands...that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD’S and He will give you into our hands.”

5. THOUGHT:  Substance matters most!

Hezekiah was not willing to "settle" for just appearance. Israel had been doing that for a long time and that is how they moved from a relationship with God to religiosity. Religiosity looks right but is only surface, and brings in hypocritical living. Much like the devout religious person that lives like the devil, but goes to religious meetings, practices all the rituals, and even gives money as a way to pay for a sinful life.

Hezekiah was not going to allow a tradition be the reason to moved ahead with Passover, when he knew the nation was not ready. He desired the Passover to be what it should be...not just look like it.

2 Chronicles 30:1–3  Now Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover to the LORD God of Israel. For the king and his princes and all the assembly in Jerusalem had decided to celebrate the Passover in the second month, since they could not celebrate it at that time, because the priests had not consecrated themselves in sufficient numbers, nor had the people been gathered to Jerusalem.

Hezekiah's Mindset led him to do what was right and what mattered...It left him with a great testimony for his life.

2 Kings 18:5-7 He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel; so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among those who were before him. For he clung to the LORD; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the LORD had commanded Moses. And the LORD was with him; wherever he went he prospered.

The So What: What thoughts drive you? Does your heart lead you...or do you lead your heart? If you could write a testimony of your life...what would it say?

Enemies from Without and Within…What can I do?

At one time D. L. Moody was one of the most influential believers in the USA.  He stood firmly what Scripture taught. Obviously, this brought many enemies into his life from outside the Church.  Yet, he also had enemies inside the Church due to ego, jealousy and fleshly thinking. How did he deal with that? It was how he thought that gave him the path to victory. When speaking about troubles in his life this was his mindset: “I have had more trouble with D. L. Moody than with any other man who has crossed my path. If I can only keep him right, I don't have any trouble with other people.” Once when he was asked to be the “evangelist” for a city-wide event, some of the leaders in various Churches desired it to be them. One put it this way: “Why Moody? Does he have a monopoly of the Holy Spirit?” One wise man answered: “No, he does not have a monopoly of the Holy Spirit; but the Holy Spirit has a monopoly of him!”

The outside actions of Moody were the result of what…or better, Who was in control of his thoughts. Moody had two choices, being controlled by himself, sin nature and the Adversary, or by himself, the new creation and the Holy Spirit. We must always remember that the accountability God has given all humans is the free control of what we choose to do. It is not honest to blame Satan for our actions, nor is it stealing glory from God to state that we chose to do what was right. Paul did:

2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith

Satan is actively behind the direction of our fallen nature, and the Holy Spirit is what empowers our new nature:

1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

2 Timothy 1:14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.

It is our responsibility “Who” we yield too. How we think sets the tone of how we act!

King Hezekiah teaches us many things about that principle, he accomplished two major items:

A. Restored honor to God

        B. Restored independence of Judah

How? He kept several key thoughts before his mind, which produced his actions. Consider:

THOUGHT: Do it right!

Hezekiah did not do a "quickie" for God! He understood that to BE right with God, Israel had to "purge" themselves of ALL their idolatry.

2 Chron 29:3-5 In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the LORD and repaired them. He brought in the priests and the Levites and gathered them into the square on the east. Then he said to them, “Listen to me, O Levites. Consecrate yourselves now, and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers, and carry the uncleanness out from the holy place.

THOUGHT: Know why you are doing something!

"Business as usual" creates a negative reaction. Just going through the motions, doing "something" just because someone told us to, yet we do not understand why leads only to a partial commitment. That never accomplishes any true goal! This is why "second generation" Christians fall away so easily, they possess only their parents' faith, they never made it their own faith. Ownership is essential if we want to finish what we committed to.

Hezekiah knew what God had said to Moses and Israel, so he shared this Truth with the people.

Deuteronomy 12:2–4  “You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess serve their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. “You shall tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and burn their Asherim with fire, and you shall cut down the engraved images of their gods and obliterate their name from that place. “You shall not act like this toward the LORD your God.

2 Chron 29:6-11 “For our fathers have been unfaithful and have done evil in the sight of the LORD our God, and have forsaken Him and turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and have turned their backs. “They have also shut the doors of the porch and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense or offered burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel. “Therefore the wrath of the LORD was against Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror, of horror, and of hissing, as you see with your own eyes. “For behold, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this. “Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that His burning anger may turn away from us. “My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to minister to Him, and to be His ministers and burn incense.”

We will look at several other "mindsets" next time.

The So What: Is what you believe what YOU believe or is it what someone else to you to believe? Do you know why you live the way you live? Do you set up a time of evaluation of your life, or is your pace too fast, so you are just "doing" out of habit?

Think about who is talking?

I have chosen to remain silent concerning politics because my focus is to encourage all – Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Anarchists and even anti-everything’s to meditate on their eternal condition, which is far more important than 4 years, or 100 years. However, I am stunned with one segment of our society that has become…at least in their own thinking…the “guiding” lights to all the world. As I pondered how big their microphone is, how everything they do and say is in the spotlight and how quickly our so-called “unbiased free press” maneuvers their opinions into “Authority Speech” I felt led to at least challenge all of us to consider who we are listening to.

They preach hard about unity, yet divide everyone into groups and label them. Yet they are one of the most elite groups in the world. They have an uncanny ability with “the Arts” or the ability to make money. All of that is fine, but it does not establish anything about what they truly know about life. These individuals place themselves as authorities concerning “relationships”, “environment”, “government”, “morals”...and every other area of life. Are they qualified? Every individual has a right to their own position, but if their opinion is treated by the main mode of communication, "the media", as authoritative, will not a culture suffer from a false perception of what is "real"? Just consider Germany in the 1930s and how an elite group controlled communication.

Please note, that as with any "group" there are exceptions that exist, not everyone in the "group" thinks or walks in step with the "group." However, if we see an 80% or higher ratio all thinking the same way, then when we discuss "the group" we are not labeling all individuals in the group, but the overall mindset of the group.

So Consider:

Authority: This group derives it's status because they get paid loads of money pretending to be other people, or because they were intelligent enough in one area of life to make Billions of dollars. This does qualify them to speak authoritatively on how to act in theater, how to make music, or how to make money, but there is so much more to life.

Relationships: This group preaches how important relationships are and why we should all tolerate everyone else's view of anyone's relationship. Yet, most cannot be committed to a single relationship with one other individual for more than a few years...many times a few months. All that is needed to break that relationship is a new "love scene" in a film or a career choice that won't fit the relationship. Yet, they will ridicule a certain kind of relationship (traditional) that they consider primeval and no longer relevant. They also ridicule, think less of, and demean anyone that has a certain accent (Southern) and/or lives outside a large city.

Riches: This group states that the problem with our country is "rich people" yet they are all rich. They live in modern-day castles (many have more than one), on huge estates of land, walled-in for protection, and guarded by armed individuals. They have no concept of what they would have to do if their car, phone, or some other important device in their life broke because they can easily buy many more. They threaten to leave the country if they don't get their way in a vote, yet never do, nor will they because they could never make as much money anywhere else, and they love it too much to live without it.

Environment: They preach how "we" (other groups) are destroying the environment, yet their own transportation uses obscene amounts of energy, they also have/use private jets, boats, etc. Their movies burn energy throughout all the filming no matter what the light is outside, the electricity they use to produce films, music, theater plays is unbelievable (the electric companies or generator companies love them) not to mention the amount of pollution created in explosions and the destruction of items that most of us would just love to drive or own is incredible.

Government: Most of this group never lived outside a government that was free and had a catch net for people who could not make it, until they were so rich they did not need the net. A year or two in an overtly corrupt or dictatorial government and a 3rd world economy would help them realize the difference they have been spoiled with. Sacrifice to them is not giving up what "you want to do" or even your life for a larger cause. Sacrifice is having to remain on your estate, eating very expensive ice cream, or not getting an award and appreciation for the work they have the freedom to choose to do. There is no doubt many in this group worked hard to get to where they are, very hard, yet it seems they have forgotten what it is like to be content to get a seat on the bus or a tip at their table. All they wanted was to be famous, and now that they are they make two horrible mistakes. They believe they really are experts in so many areas, mostly because they played a part or read a book about it. Also, they endlessly complain about no privacy! You want to be famous...but go unnoticed? Back to logic 101 for you! You see, if the grass is greener on the other side of the mountain...the water bill is higher!

Respect: This group demands that all respect all, yet have no problem allowing profane garbage flow from their lips when speaking about someone they do not like. No honor is given to an office because that would require a standard of manners and self-control. I can honor even a person I deeply dislike for the sake of respect for the office. They demand equal respect for the male and female, yet most of their products glorify the physical "look" of the male and build a reputation that exalts his use of one organ...NOT the brain! They portray women as pieces of meat there for a man's pleasure. I personally know the pain and struggle of the plague of pornography, soft & hard, it all leads to the same end, a male-oriented idea of sex. Women are just along for the ride! Men were created to respond to the opposite sex visually, but it is difficult to keep the balance when all you see is a presentation of women advertising their bodies and being as male about sex as men are. Women are equal, but different, thank God! They bring the balance of the importance of relationship into the sexual tension of men and women. At 15 my mom shared the balance: "Nate, you make love to one woman in your life, all the others you "blank!" That never left me and I am glad it did not, I look at women as my sisters, co-workers, and friends. Many are much more talented, intelligent, wiser, and spiritual than I. Only one possesses the right to intimacy though.

The list is endless, but I will say that the most hypocritical aspect of this group is when it comes to eternal things. Any belief is alright except one. That belief is demeaned, misrepresented, and has such hostile reactions to it. It amazes me how angry this group can become about a Book they consider a fairy tale! They do not act that way about the belief in Bigfoot or Santa Clause! If the Bible is just made up, feel sorry for those that believe it, but why become so enraged and out of control? I think experiencing "The Green Mile" was what gave me the answer. This was clearly a movie that should have received much more as far as acclaim. Other films that dealt with the death penalty were talked up a lot more by this group. What was not liked about this movie was the "bottom line" of the movie. All of us will answer for our life - we will be held accountable. That is not popular with this group. Just consider the lawyers they have groomed to avoid facing the consequences of their actions.

    * The impact this group has had on two other groups is tragic. The communications group now cares more about being a star and popular, than just reporting the facts and keeping their opinions to themselves. The political group has digressed from being serious people dealing with huge issues that will affect an entire country, to now a group that cares only about their smaller group within their group, and has a permanent wet finger, so they can check to see which way the wind is blowing so they can know how to vote, no conviction or stand is needed. People who think it is more important to sound cool and be "with it" and perform and dance on TV shows instead of ensuring the protection of a document that brought human rights to it's the greatest level ever...flaws and all, it is the reason the wrongs in this country were righted, not from looting, attacking those that lay their life on the line to protect us. I believe we should defund this group and take away their perks until they do the job they were voted to do. Does the word "budget" mean anything to them or do they think it is synonymous with "spend?" This group's uniform could easily have a yellow streak down its back. They also need to be reminded that the term, "People's Servant" means "me" serving the people, not the "people" serving me!

Many in the Arts and Money group will just marginalize me by saying that if I did not pay to see these things or use their inventions they would not be rich...therefore it is my fault. I respect that, however, I never complain about how they use their money, how much they spend to produce, or their right to do so. We live in a free country (I think) But they complain endlessly about this country and how many of us want to live. I want them to have their opinion, that is America, I just don't want to have them take mine away. If they so detest this country, then they should please take their money and go - they can afford it! We cannot, and we need to get back to figuring out if we can catch the bus or train, afford a car, buy or rent a home, and feed our family. They don't have to be bothered by that. So I say to them, "enjoy the fruit of your labor," but stop trying to tell me how you want me to live. Go live your life, and allow us to live ours.

Who’s Point Of View Is Right?

There once was a farmer and his wife who every morning had a disagreement about breakfast. The farmer wanted eggs and sausage, his wife wanted eggs and bacon. They decided that until they agreed they would eat oatmeal. Each was convinced that their personal view would win out. As the days went on, they became even more set in their ways, so they decided to have all on the farm vote. It was a 50/50 tie…with only one vote left. They opened the ballet and to their surprise was a write-in vote – “Eggs only” it read. Signed…Mr. Pig!

A point of view can change drastically the outcome of a decision. That is why our mindset is so important when we deal with issues in life. We are looking at how David controlled his thoughts when faced with very difficult circumstances. He gives us another key example of maintaining the proper mindset when dealing with issues we all face. We are all fallen human beings with limited abilities. We all desire God’s forgiveness and guidance; we all will face God’s judgment and we desire to praise God properly. How can we do that? The key is not approaching God from our point of view; instead, approach God from His point of view.

Consider how David thought: “I will approach God based on His love for me, not my love for Him. God's love never fails!”

Forgiveness:

Psalm 31:16, 51:1, 96:16 – “Make Your face to shine upon Your servant; Save me in Your lovingkindness.” “Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.” “Answer me, O LORD, for Your lovingkindness is good; According to the greatness of Your compassion, turn to me”

Guidance:

Psalm 31:3 For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me.

Judgment:

Psalm 35:24 Judge me, O LORD my God, according to Your righteousness, And do not let them rejoice over me.

Praise:

Psalm 7:17 I will give thanks to the LORD according to His righteousness And will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

David controlled his mind to such a point that he understood that he was where he was, not by his power, but because God desired it.

2 Samuel 7:18-21 Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far...For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know.”

What a difference it would make in how we live if we understood the key to our success was to relax and follow the Lord. Instead of striving to make a name for ourselves!

The So What: David understood the outcome of everything was dependent on the Lord only! Which is why he never stopped seeking the Lord to impact his thoughts. Even when after he knew that God was going to take his first child because of the murder he committed, he still approached God on the basis of Who God is:

2 Samuel 12:21–23 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows, the LORD may be gracious to me, that the child may live.’ “But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

Do you always seek God’s view, or do you decide for yourself or give up? Learn from David.

What can you do when everything feels out of control?

2020??? Having lived over 60 years, I have never in my life experienced the complete change of direction for the year of all the plans which so many people had, including myself! The impact on the economy is clear...the impact on the human soul and heart I fear is leaking to the surface, not always in a good or healthy way, however, I believe the majority of that frustration remains buried and is not being processed. If left undealt with, the damage to many will be very disheartening. Already strained relationships in families are impacting homes, domestic violence, addictions, and suicides have increased.

When we lose control of so much, what can we do? I believe the answer lies in learning to control the only thing we in reality have control over...Our Minds! Even without a Pandemic, all the plans we have are not really under our control if we are honest. Yet, even if we were trapped in an elevator, during a blackout, in the middle of a Typhoon we still have control over our thoughts! I have felt led by the Lord to camp on this issue for the next several devotions.

When everything around is falling apart, there are two Truths you need to fix your mind and heart on:

First Truth: The Sovereign God of the universe remains on the Throne and is still in complete control…either causing OR allowing everything that is happening.

Second Truth: You alone control how you process all the circumstances!

I discussed the first Truth in 3 devotionals I posted in March 2020, 15th, 16th, & 17th, feel free to read them at: gwmnate.blogspot.com

God never has the problem, we do! So I want to consider how we can take control of our mind from examples in Scripture.

Begin with this principle concerning humans from Scripture:

Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinks within himself, so he is.

How we think determines how we act. Consider David:

1 Samuel 16:1–13 Now the LORD said to Samuel… “Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse… for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.” When David came before Samuel the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”

David had heard what God said…he was to be the King, not Saul. This was God’s decision. Saul rejected that and sought to kill David. Twice David had the chance to kill Saul while he slept, (1 Sam. 24:4-7 & 26:8-11) yet he took this stand:

David said, “As the LORD lives, surely the LORD will strike him, or his day will come that he dies, or he will go down into battle and perish. “The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’S anointed”

David did not try to control this outcome, instead, he controlled his mind with this thought – “God said it, Therefore HE will bring it to pass!” David put God's testimony on the line, he based everything on Who God is, not who he is or what the circumstances are!

The Scriptures are full of God’s promises to us, consider just these two:

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Hebrews 13:5–6 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,” so that we confidently say, “THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?”

The So What: Who or What are you trusting in during this difficult time? Politicians, Doctors, Money? Focus your mind on Who God is and His promises! Embrace this thought: "God, I yield to You and believe no matter what happens, I am in Your hands!"

It may be inconvenient…but it still is what it is!

Gal 1:10-12 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

I was 20 yrs old in my Sr. year of Bible College. Dee and I had just finished ministry and had turned into bed. It had been a full day, 7 classes at College and then onto our time with the youth at Ft. Belvoir. The phone rang at 1 AM, I answered and heard the all to familiar echo that long-distance calls had back then. It was my dad…my mom was with the Lord. A reality called “Truth” had entered my life, it did not matter how I felt about it, it would not change for me, desiring it to be different would not change it…it was what it was…Truth!

Truth never claims to be anything but what it is! Political correctness won’t change it! Popularity won’t change it! False science, personal desires, villainization and even ignoring it won’t change it. It is what it is! The real question is, “Am I going to accept it and deal with it?”

We live in an age where it seems most of society creates their own Truth based on their preferences, and forget the facts! The strategy that is now in vogue is to attack and destroy the one that is stating the Truth. What has taken possession of so many souls in this world is the fear of Truth. That is why so many humans refuse to see a doctor when they sense something is wrong…by not hearing they have cancer, the cancer will go away! Sometime later they find out far too late to do anything about it, and the Truth of the disease takes them. Much like swimming with a shark and pretending it is a dolphin, what you want it to be will not stop it from eating you!

This is Paul’s point in this section of Scripture. The Gospel is not Paul’s Gospel, it is God’s Good News to this world. Humans can accept it or reject it, but that is it. Contrary to what many say on TV or in books, God did not offer a “consumer” gospel. Where individuals get to tweak it as they see fit. I respect individuals far more that deal with the Gospel as is, reject it, and see Jesus as a narrow egomaniac than those that adjust their Jesus to be the god of 31 flavors! If Jesus’ Gospel is Truth, then He is the only way to God and He is God in the flesh. If Jesus is not who he claimed to be then he is a despicable liar and I am a fool for following him! I can live with that reality because eternity is too important to play with or ignore. I understand the plan God revealed in the Scriptures and I really don’t care what some Hollywood elite thinks about it. It amazes me who we give authority to in our lives. I would hate to think someone believed something just because I did, yet it seems the powerful and famous thrive on that delusion. Do I desire people to hear the good news of God, YES! However, that is where I stop. It is their decision alone...because they alone will answer to the Creator for that decision…as will I. If Jesus was just a wanna-be god, I will be very ashamed when I stand to give an answer for my life before the Creator. However, I have weighed my decision, after thorough searching and studying, I find no better plan to offer fallen human beings eternal life.

The So What: What is your plan for yourself after your body dies? How much time and energy have you invested in searching for Truth? How important is that if 100 years is not the length of your existence? What if you exist forever? How long is 100 years compared to an eternity of years?

Is “doing your own thing” really wise?

Gal 1:6-9 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel--which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

A news item from Los Angeles shows that Judge Yankwich had such a case as to make judges want to scream. Luther Wright and Hermann Rongg appeared before Federal Judge Leon R. Yankwich, each claiming ownership of a patent. The judge attempted to moderate the dispute, declaring: “Well, one of you must be wrong.” “That’s right,” declared Rongg, “I’m Rongg, and I’m right.” Then Wright interrupted: “He’s wrong, your honor, I’m right and Rongg is wrong.” But largely upon the strength of a letter Wright wrote Rongg, Judge Yankwich at length terminated the Wright-Rongg dispute by ruling: “Paradoxical though it may appear in this case Wright is wrong and Rongg is right, and I so enter judgment.”!

In this case, the difference between right and wrong can be confusing, however, in life, the stakes are too high to take a chance!

Paul, endeavoring to encourage a young Church to stick to the Truth, communicates a very important principle that applies in all ages. Truth is not subjective…it is objective, even if we don’t like it! I grew up in an era where the slogan “do your own thing” was the mantra of the day. In life there is a lot of room to “do your own thing” that was set up by God…it is called “liberty.” Scripture points out that some honor one day over another, or feel that eating certain foods are wrong. God’s standard for that is that each person needs to be sure their conscience agrees with their action. That is a lot of freedom. Still, there are certain Truths that are non-negotiable in Scripture. If you are honest each one is clear, like there is only one true God, there is only ONE way to enter a relationship with Him…through His Son Jesus Christ, salvation is based on His grace and received through faith, our works can accomplish nothing as far as eternal destination. This standard comes from the Scriptures which many, including myself, embrace. Everyone has a right to disagree with the Scriptures as the standard, another God-given right. This is very important to understand fully because it will impact a person’s eternal destiny.

The reason this is so important is today so many “famous” people have set themselves up as “authorities” over everything. Religion, environment, relationships, politics…the list never ends. Some very important issues need to be considered here.

I love the arts and admire those that are so gifted at it, but I fail to understand why someone that is very gifted in “acting” to be something they are not can be so arrogant and self-absorbed that they would demand I drop a standard of Truth to accept their standard? I did not create the Scriptures, and even have a difficult time accepting what they say at times, but have committed myself to their authority. Scripture is not my custom made standard…why should I adopt “Joe Hollywood’s” standard? Based on how messed up most of their lives are, their standard fails!  Second, what does it say about someone that thinks the whole world cares what they think about life’s most important issues? If you have a problem with what I believe, take it up with the One that Authored the Scriptures. If you think the Scriptures are just a fairy tale, then think me foolish and move on…why get soooooo angry and hostile about it? Do you hate people that believe in Bigfoot?  Grow up!

Lastly, all this freedom God gives is yours, and you are free to believe whatever you want and free to DO anything you want except one thing…escape the consequences.

The So What: Where do your beliefs come from? Why? Have you studied the Scriptures to see what you think of them? Why or why not? Can ignoring the Truth help you avoid the consequences? What do you believe happens to you after your body dies? If you exist eternally, how important is that question? If you are wrong, what is the cost?

How can we be rescued?

Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead), and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore.

Have you ever been in danger and not known it until it had passed? I remember a time I was on my motorcycle following a pickup truck that had a refrigerator tied down in the bed. We were moving up a hill, and the truck was going faster then I was because my 175cc enduro could not travel much faster then it was. Obviously, I did not need to move over to the other lane because I could not pass the truck. Yet, a strong sense possessed my mind to move over. Just after I entered the other lane, I heard and saw the chain snap and the refrigerator flew out of the back of the bed and rolled right past me. I pulled off the road because my arms were shaking…if I had not moved I most likely would have been killed.

This passage contains some great truths! Consider this portion:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age

Some important words are used here. Grace, Peace, Gave and Rescue

Grace is that which God does to and for us without anything from us. A totally unconditional kind act.

Peace is not an emotion that can be affected by circumstances. Instead, it is a sense of calm and contentment that flows from in to out of us.

Gave is the act of relinquishing something that is in your possession.

Rescue is made up of two Greek words, “to take” and “out” The context would dictate what a person is being taken out of. In this case, it is evil.

To rescue someone they must already be in trouble! This is the point of scripture! We do not have to get ourselves into trouble, it has already happened. We were born separated from God because of sin.

Jesus “gave” (Phil. 2) Himself to rescue us from evil…notice it states “present”. Scripture makes it clear that when an individual trust's in the sacrifice of Christ to pay the debt of their sin, they are rescued from an eternity of separation from God. However, notice this rescuing is not only for the future! “This PRESENT evil age” is here and now! How does this work? I still have terrible things happen to me, troubles, disease, crimes…not to mention the evil things I see every day in this world. How am I rescued from this?

In two ways; first, we have “free choice” so we can choose to follow God’s principles and that will deliver us from many of the troubles that sin brings. Secondly, due to living in a fallen world where an active evil angelic being continues to bring strife to all, though we cannot take our bodies out from it while physically alive, we can mentally and emotionally be rescued from the stress, the worry, and the weight of the evil we see, but have no control over. By keeping in front of us that Christ has the final victory, we can be at peace in the midst of all circumstances because we know all evil and troubles are temporary and we will soon be with our Lord, forever delivered from evil!

The So What: Does the future cause you anxiety? Why? How sure do you know that you will be with God after this life? What difference should that make right now? Do you know how to make sure you can know you will spend eternity with God? What are you doing to find out? I would be glad to explain how you can know.

How do I remain on “Top” in an evil age?

Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead), and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore.

While I was sitting on a covered porch, the grass had just been mowed, a thunderstorm broke over the area. Buckets of rain came down, I noticed the grass as it raveled over the porch. The blades that remained on top of the tile would get stuck and not move; the blades of grass that were in the low groove of the grout moved very quickly across the porch and back into the yard. Taking the lower (humble) path moves you to your goal quickly.

Pandemic, riots, different views not tolerated, wars…quite a difficult time to be alive! So was Paul’s day, how did he manage to remain on top of it and not get dragged down…can we do the same?

This passage carries one of the secrets to that! The natural thing to do when we are confronted by things we do not like is to take control. You would think that would be good and right…except we need to make sure what nature is controlling that “natural thing”! For me, it is really easy to allow the sin nature to be what is driving the “natural thing”.

The “natural” thing to do for we humans is to “muscle” our way through, flex our pride, and demand our rights. That is exactly what the enemy and the flesh desire. It is also why evil in this world is so powerful. Actions driven by what comes natural for us in a fallen world is self-centered, self-absorbed, and selfish! It may save the individual from what they do not want to go through, but it will be at the expense of everyone and everything else! Believe me, I have experienced this often as my selfish sin nature protects what I want, leaving me with the regret of the insult I have done to my Lord and the damage I have inflicted on others.

One of the keys to proper actions is subtly seen in this passage – Humility. Yielding to God’s way to deal with things goes against the “natural” – we will see this all through Galatians – but brings the true victory! Triumphing over evil is not accomplished by muscle or willpower raising yourself up to overcome, instead of yielding and becoming low, depending and trusting on a Power outside of yourself. Like the grass in my illustration, swift movement through difficult times happens in a valley…in our case…the valley of selflessness.

Notice the Holy Spirit’s and Paul’s approach. As God is brought into the greeting only the Father and Son are mentioned. Isn’t the Holy Spirit God? Yes, but as is so often He does not highlight Himself, even though we know He inspired the writers of the Scriptures. This is an oxymoron… but God is the most humble person in the universe! Paul also expresses this quality…his call is not his, everything he is because God called him to “be”, not “do” that! Being is essential and the by-product of true humility. Also, Paul includes his co-laborers, he takes the spotlight off of himself. We are the ones that make him the “great Apostle” not him! He was great, no man has taught me more than other than Christ, but he did not exalt himself. How different from the “leaders” we see in this world…sadly including many of the superstars of Christendom today. It is a wonder that much of the “Church” cannot be seen as different from the world?

Luke 1:52  “He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble.

1 Peter 5:6  Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,

The So What: How do you behave when you don’t get your way? Do you feel overwhelmed? Why? What are you doing about that? How does the evil in the world affect you? What are you doing about that?

How should we deal with an evil age?

Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead), and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore.

I am hoping to help all of us to consider how we should live when the environment we are in is intrinsically evil.

Paul lived at a terrible time on this earth.

Paul challenges our thinking, which is essential to getting a handle of how we deal with being in an environment of evil.

Sent not by men - this is so important to keep in focus. We are hereby Christs Sovereign will it is Jesus that has placed us where we are. Yes, we have accountabilities to earthly domains; however, our call is given by the one who holds all those earthly domains in the palm of His hand! This will produce the endurance we will need to finish well!

This is why Paul makes it clear that something more than human power drives him.

Through Jesus Christ and God the Father Instead of being stuck on trying to figure out the Trinity, which will always amaze me. We should get excited that we are not on our own we are joined by Three persons in One God!

The So What! Do you sense the evil around you? How does it affect you? What are you doing about that? Do you have a community that you are connected to that is in this with you?
