Probing Proverbs 14:6 A mocker seeks wisdom and never
finds it, but knowledge comes easily to those with understanding.
When we see this kind of statement in Scripture, it is
important to remember that context when using words in Scripture is very
important. The word “mocker” refers to an over all lifestyle characteristic. Someone who
once in a while fails to think properly and makes a foolish statement is not
what the Scripture would call a “mocker.” The concept is: The Mocker mocks because
that is who he is! This is based on the same reality to the answer of this
question: “Why do I sin?” Answer: “I am not a sinner because I sin, I sin
because I am a sinner!”
An individual that consistently is scornful of Truth, laughs
and ridicules the thought of a Holy God not only lacks common sense and
humility, he or she will never discover wisdom. They may possess great
knowledge (Data) but they do not know how to use it! (Application) Scripture
points out what causes a person to be a “mocker”:
Proverbs 21:24 Mockers are proud and haughty; they act
with boundless arrogance.
Proverbs 15:12 Mockers hate to be corrected, so they stay away from the wise.
What is so tragic is that God has done everything to reach out
to all, yet many demand they will only approach God on their terms! Their pride
causes them to spell God, “god” not “GOD”!
Being an “expert” on sin myself…I know the pain those
actions and moments can cause. Fortunately my relationship to my Creator brings
those sins to light and I am able to choose to do right. Going low (humility)
is the way to see God lift you up!
Proverbs 3:34 The Lord mocks the mockers but is gracious
to the humble.
The knowledge of Who God is and then applied (wisdom) leads to
a life of no regret, in spite of failures because God has forgiven and
restored!
The So What: When the Truth makes you uncomfortable, what do
you do with it? Do you treat Truth like it is subjective? What did Jesus say
about knowing the Truth? Why is the Truth powerful?
